MacLynx should work on PowerPC and 680x0 Macintoshes with System 7 or later, with MacTCP or OpenTransport. As this version is the first public version, it has not been tested on a large number of configurations. And as MacLynx is developed and tested on a PowerMac, the 680x0 might be less stable.
You can find information about Lynx and copying in the "about_lynx" folder.
Lynx features
MacLynx uses a Lynx 2.7.1 kernel, and supports Lynx features for HTTP (Frames, cookies, maps, ...). You should check the general Lynx help (or the Lynx site) for more information (URL at the end of this document).
MacOS specific features
General
- Lynx window is resizable
- You can click on links to activate them (this feature is limited to regular http URLs, and does not work with forms items)
AppleScript
- Open Document, Quit Application, Open Application and GetURL appleEvents are supported (MacLynx can be used as a default IC http helper).
Drag & drop
- You can drop an URL onto MacLynx window to make it "jump" to that URL
- You can drop a local file or folder on MacLynx icon.
Speech Manager
- MacLynx can speak a whole document (with the 'p'rint command) or pronounce the current link (see lynx.cfg)
External helpers
- You can specify external application to launch after having downloaded a file. See lynx.cfg for an example.
- You can use an external image viewer to open images in a document (press '*' to switch to image mode). See lynx.cfg for more information.
Internet Config
- MacLynx support IC file typing preferences, as well as automatic post-processing when defined
- MacLynx reads e-mail address, homepage from your IC preferences
- MacLynx uses IC preferences to launch your favorite helper on non-http URLs.
Limitations
- Text is rendered with 7 bits approximations
- No cut/copy/paste on MacLynx window
- Cannot print by itself yet.
- MacLynx does not read proxies configuration from IC yet, but you can set this in the lynx.cfg file.
- Some minor bugs in window updates.
- Although "file:///" URLs are now correctly supported, you can't reference directly a disk folder, nor drop a disk icon onto MacLynx.
Miscellaneous
- Lynx is an highly customizable browser (see the lynx.cfg file). This file is the standard lynx configuration file, and has general options, some specific Unix/VMS entries (ignored on a Mac) but also some MacOS specific points.
- You can trace MacLynx activity with 'ctrl-T'
- You can disconnect interaction with InternetConfig. See lynx.cfg.
Development
MacLynx is a Lynx 2.7.1 port, and nearly all of the merit of this program should go to the University of Kansas and to the LYNX-DEV group, who developed the original Lynx.
MacLynx uses GUSI socket code by Matthias Neeracher, and parts of a curses code by Larry Gensch & Robert Zimmerman. Removal of some Unixisms in MacLynx has been helped by the Wayne Buttles' port for DOS/Win32.
Thanksks to...
Franck Brunel, who initiated this project by repeating endlessly "is there anybody out there to port Lynx on the MacOS ?" and has been a great help; Jay Farrell for his exhaustive testing and support, all the alpha-testers, and members of the fr.comp.sys.mac.* newsgroups for advices, support and "bonne humeur".
